Gary Smith

CEO Encore Associates (Ex SVP Marketing, Safeway)

 

Gary Smith has a distinguished career in grocery marketing, merchandising and retail

operations spanning more than 40 years. Prior to founding Encore Associates, Gary served as

Senior Vice President of Marketing at Safeway where he was credited with the development

and implementation of many of Safeway’s industry-leading merchandising and marketing

programs company’s premium private label Safeway SELECT brands. He was also responsible

for the rollout of Safeway’s first computer-assisted forward buying system and the consolidation

of Safeway’s corporate advertising, pharmacy merchandising, buying and pricing functions

into a single corporate group. In 1998 Gary accepted The Private Label Manufacturers

Associations “Retailer of the Year” for his role in the development of the Safeway SELECT brand

and private label merchandising strategy. Gary is a member of the Board of Directors at

Treehouse Foods, The Winery Exchange and a member of the Advisory Boards of the Western

Association of Food Chains,Niman Ranch, Inc. and Special Cases, Inc.

 

Andre Turenne

Senior Vice President, D. E. Shaw group

 

Andre Turenne is a senior vice president of D.E. Shaw & Co., L.P. and an executive of the D.E. Shaw group's venture capital unit. Mr. Turenne has more than 25 years of operating, technical, and venture investment experience in the technology sector. Prior to joining the D.E. Shaw group in 2006, Mr. Turenne was a managing director of NeoCarta Ventures, Inc., a venture capital investment firm. From 1996 to 2000, he served as senior manager of strategic investments at Intel Capital, the venture capital unit of Intel Corporation. Before beginning his more than ten years of venture capital experience, Mr. Turenne also spent five years at Intel Corporation in various technical, marketing, and sales management roles. Prior to working at Intel, Mr. Turenne spent six years in various engineering and engineering management positions at Photocircuits Corporation, a leading producer of printed circuit boards. He currently serves on the boards of directors of Altierre Corp.; eMotive Communications, Inc.; Meru Networks; PanTerra Networks; PGP Corporation; Reactrix Systems, Inc.; and Winery Exchange, Inc. Mr. Turenne received his B.S. in engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and his M.B.A. from Northeastern University, where he was recognized as valedictorian of his class.

 

 

Michio Fujimura
Managing Director, ATA Ventures

 

Michio is a co-founder and Managing Director of ATA Ventures. For 15 years, Michio owned and operated Vanguard Systems Consulting (VSC). VSC built a strong reputation in Silicon Valley that specialized in the areas of international business development and business operations consulting (product planning, product marketing and manufacturing) for U.S. start-up companies. To assist start-up teams, Michio has been responsible for identifying more than $200M for over 20 start-up companies through a combination of equity investments, licenses and NRE. Michio was also instrumental in defining marketing opportunities and requirements for the establishment of subsidiaries, partnerships and distributorships for American corporations in Japan. Prior to VSC, Michio was a member of the charter team of David Systems, a pioneer in packet data networking systems.

Ravi Chiruvolu

General Partner, GKM Ventures, Charter Ventures

 

A regular columnist in Venture Capital Journal, Chiruvolu is widely recognized as a thought

leader in the venture capital industry. Currently, he serves as Venture Partner at GKM

Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on investments in expansion-stage technology

companies located in the Western U.S. From June 2000 through June 2005, he was Managing
Director of Charter Venture Capital, a $150 million early stage technology and life science

fund. Previously, Chiruvolu was a Principal at Alta Partners, a $225 million technology and

life sciences fund. Prior to Alta, he held operating positions at Peapod, where from July 1996 to

October 1998, he served as General Manager of Online Services and Director of Business

Development. Before that, Chiruvolu was in the Strategic Planning group at Ameritech, where

he was nominated for the Chairman's Award,which is reserved for the ten top performers, in

the Wireless Infrastructure group at Motorola, andthe Systems Integration group at Mitre

Corporation. Chiruvolu also spent two years as a business analyst at McKinsey & Company in

Washington DC. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, a Bachelor of Science degree

in Mechanical Engineering and a Minor in Economics from MIT,and a MS in Engineering

(specialization in robotics and control systems) from MIT.

 

Sean Foote

General Partner, Labrador Ventures

 

Sean Foote has been a venture capitalist investing in early stage companies for the past 9  years. He is  active on the board of directors of Altierre Corporation, Eoplex Technologies,  Everyone.net, ezboard, Green Border Technologies, and Integrated Materials Inc. Before venture investing, Mr.Foote was a management consultant with Boston Consulting Group. Mr. Foote also worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories, developing artificial intelligence systems for testing complicated telecommunications circuits. Mr. Foote is a Lecturer in Entrepreneurship at the University of California's Haas School of Business and also has taught classes at the University of Michigan's Business School, University of Virginia's Darden School of Business and University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business

 

Willie Heflin

Managing Director, Kinetic Ventures

 

Willie joined Kinetic Ventures in 1990. His investment activities focus on telecommunication

and information technologies and software. He has led investments in Altierre, Ample

Communications,Caymas, Cerent, NetCore, Corvis, Sitara, Ciena, Seneca Networks, Zaffire,

Optical Capital Group,Nayna Networks, Calix, and Covega. Previously, Willie was with IBM,

Marcam Corporation and Research Investment Advisors. He received his MS in Management

from the MIT Sloan School of Management and his MS and BS degrees in Mechanical
